A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left organization face trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. At depots managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
