An Compassion of People We Don't Know: How a Person I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Obtain the Job That Altered My Path

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had booked a two-week stay there on the way to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS known as International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we got some food, took a seat, and started talking to other diners.

Sitting next to me was an individual of Iraqi origin studying engineering at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I my profession was, and I told him that I had newly finished with a degree in science and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – right next door to the school of engineering, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He recommended that I should apply for a position with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The engineering student walked over to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I attended the interview – but straight off told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a city where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in multiple respects. I lacked the courage or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and ask for a job. And, I had always wanted to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university paved the way for a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
