The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
